Madhya Pradesh police seized ₹36.19 lakh in cash in Datia district ahead of the 30 July Assembly byelection. The seizure matters because cash movement during elections is monitored to reduce the risk of voter inducement and other electoral malpractices.

Police conducted searches across Datia district under the Model Code of Conduct. Officials said the cash was recovered from two vehicles at different checkpoints and that the cases were under investigation by Flying Surveillance Teams.

What happened

According to the police, about ₹15 lakh was seized from a car at the Sevdha toll checkpoint during the night spanning Thursday and Friday. Superintendent of Police Mayur Khandelwal made the seizure at that checkpoint.

Police also said about ₹21.19 lakh was recovered from an SUV at the Goraghat checkpoint on Thursday.
