A toxic gas leak at an NHPC tunnel project in Sikkim has caused a major fatal accident, with 20 people dead and rescue efforts continuing for 5 trapped workers. The incident is relevant for UPSC because it combines infrastructure risk, disaster response, and workplace safety in a high-altitude project site.

What happened

NHPC stated that site engineering teams were working round the clock with authorities to stabilise the tunnel environment and complete rescue operations. The company said a detailed investigation would determine the cause of the gas leak.

A special rescue team from the Director-General of Mines Safety reached the site and coordinated with rescue teams and local authorities.

Official response and follow-up

Prime Minister Narendra Modi called Sikkim Chief Minister Prem Singh Tamang to enquire about the situation. The Chief Minister later inspected the project site.
