What happened in the Chamoli tunnel rescue (Uttarakhand)
Rescue teams in Chamoli, Uttarakhand, continued operations at an under-construction tunnel after water rushed into the tunnel and filled it with debris. The rescue work focused on draining water and reaching workers trapped inside the remaining tunnel sections.
On Saturday, rescuers recovered one more body inside the tunnel. This raised confirmed deaths to seven, while two workers remained trapped/untraced as of the time of reporting.
The incident sequence described in the update began around 7 p.m. on Thursday, when water rushed into the 3-km tunnel under construction.
The update links the sudden water inflow to landslides and subsidence. It states that the inflow filled about half the tunnel with debris and water, and 22 people were initially trapped inside the tunnel.
After the initial trapping, the update describes continued response steps. On Friday, an additional official review occurred and the Chief Minister of Uttarakhand visited the site. On Saturday, rescuers drained water using suction pumps and worked to reach the remaining two workers.
