Assam experienced a severe, fast-moving localized flood after exceptionally heavy rainfall over the Mon district region in late July. The flood severely affected parts of Sivasagar and Charaideo districts and isolated Tamuli Gaon (Jorhat) when surrounding waters cut it off for days.
What happened (reported on-ground effects)
Residents and officials described rapid deterioration following late-July rainfall. Large areas of Sivasagar and Charaideo districts were devastated by floodwaters. Tamuli Gaon (Jorhat) was surrounded by water and functioned as an “island” for about 110 families, even as water force reduced before reaching the settlement.
Delay in rescue and relief and preparedness gap
Rescue and relief mobilization reportedly lagged for about a week. The stated reason was preparedness: Sivasagar and Charaideo districts were described as historically less prone to major floods and therefore less disaster-ready.
