What happened (Karnataka challenges CWMA’s daily release direction)
Karnataka decided to approach the Supreme Court against a direction issued by the Cauvery Water Management Authority (CWMA). The CWMA direction required Karnataka to release 12,000 cusecs (about one TMC-ft) of Cauvery water to Tamil Nadu each day for 15 days.
Karnataka’s Supreme Court move came after Karnataka had previously complied with an earlier CWMA direction requiring Karnataka to release 3,500 cusecs per day for the same 15-day period, for delivery to Tamil Nadu. Karnataka stated that implementing the earlier requirement was difficult, but Karnataka said Karnataka met it.
What changed now (CWMA increased the daily release requirement from 3,500 to 12,000 cusecs)
CWMA issued a direction increasing the daily release requirement for Karnataka to 12,000 cusecs to Tamil Nadu each day for 15 days. Karnataka’s Water Resources Minister N. Cheluvarayaswamy indicated that implementing the higher daily release requirement would be too difficult.
