The Ministry of Skill Development and Entrepreneurship (MSDE) and Technical and Further Education (TAFE), Government of Western Australia, have entered into an MoU to set up a Centre of Excellence in Mining and Mining Equipment, Technology and Services (METS). The centre will be located at the National Skill Training Institute (NSTI), Bhubaneswar.
The initiative is relevant for UPSC because it combines skill development, mining sector capacity-building, and international cooperation. It also reflects the growing use of sector-specific training institutions to link education with industrial demand.
What has been announced
According to the release, the Centre of Excellence will develop a centre of academic excellence in sub-domains linked to mining operations, mine safety, mineral processing, and mine machinery. It will also enable exchange of students and trainees between the National Centre for Excellence and TAFE, Western Australia.
Background and earlier position
India already has a large and diverse skilling architecture under MSDE, including industrial training institutions and national-level training centres. The current development adds a specialised mining-focused layer to that ecosystem, rather than creating an entirely new institutional framework.
