The Ministry of Cooperation has linked the project to the government’s Sahkar Se Samriddhi vision and White Revolution 2.0. The announcement also positions the project as the world’s largest curd production plant, which makes it a useful Prelims-linked fact for dairy-processing and cooperative-sector revision.

Background and earlier position

Amul has already built a cooperative network in West Bengal. The official release says more than 1.25 lakh milk-producing farmers, including more than 30,000 women milk producers, are associated with Amul’s cooperative network in the State, and around nine lakh litres of milk are being procured every day through this network.

What changed now

The Amul Bengal Dairy Project is being set up at the Howrah Food Park in West Bengal with an investment of approximately ₹700 crore. On completion, the plant is expected to process around 30 lakh litres of milk per day and produce about 1,000 metric tonnes of curd and other cultured dairy products every day.

The proposed product mix includes milk packaging, ultra-high temperature milk, ice cream, paneer, ghee, sweets, and flavoured milk. The project is therefore not only a processing unit but also a value-addition platform for multiple dairy products.
