What happened

The Ministry of Ports, Shipping and Waterways informed the Rajya Sabha that India’s port-sector key performance indicators have improved over the last decade. The statement covered both major ports and non-major ports and highlighted gains in capacity, cargo handling, vessel turnaround, and berth productivity.

Key performance indicators reported by the Ministry

The ministry’s table shows improvement across all listed indicators between the two financial years compared in the reply:

At major and non-major ports, total capacity rose from 1,561 MTPA to 2,817 MTPA, and total cargo handled increased from 1,052 MT to 1,668 MT.

At major ports, total capacity increased from 873 MTPA to 1,728 MTPA, while total cargo handled rose from 581 MT to 915 MT.
