What happened

The Ministry of Ayush has outlined quality-certification pathways for Ayush products. The Ministry has linked product quality with regulatory oversight, third-party certification, and global acceptance of Indian traditional medicine products.

The three named mechanisms are the Ayush Vertical in the Central Drugs Standard Control Organisation (CDSCO), the Quality Council of India (QCI) Quality Certification Scheme, and the Ayush Quality Mark Programme.

What each mechanism does

The Ayush Vertical in CDSCO is meant to strengthen regulatory oversight through joint inspections with State and Union Territory licensing authorities. The Ministry of Ayush says this mechanism also facilitates issuance of the World Health Organization Certificate of Pharmaceutical Product (WHO-CoPP) for eligible Ayush drugs.

The QCI Quality Certification Scheme provides the Ayush Standard Mark and Ayush Premium Mark on the basis of third-party evaluation of compliance with domestic and international quality standards.
