The Government of India ordered the removal of unauthorised Battery Management System (BMS) mobile applications from app stores after reports that the applications enabled unauthorised remote control of e-rickshaw batteries. The action matters because connected mobility devices can create both safety risks and cybersecurity risks when software access is not properly authorised.

The Ministry of Electronics & IT said it had taken cognizance of reports on misuse of certain BMS applications. On 3 July 2026, the Government issued orders for removal of such applications from app stores.

Why the issue matters

BMS applications are part of the digital layer of electric mobility. If access controls are weak, software can be used to interfere with battery functions, which can affect vehicle safety, user trust, and the security of connected devices.
