The Ministry of Electronics and Information Technology says the Semicon India Programme has expanded India’s semiconductor policy from broad intent to a measurable manufacturing-and-design push. The programme matters because semiconductors sit at the centre of digital infrastructure, electronics manufacturing, and strategic technology capacity.

The Government of India launched the Semicon India Programme in January 2022 to support semiconductor fabs, display fabs, semiconductor packaging, and promotion of Indian-designed chips. The programme is a policy vehicle for both fabrication capacity and domestic design capability.

What the government says has been approved

According to the release, the government has approved 12 manufacturing projects across 6 states: Andhra Pradesh, Assam, Gujarat, Punjab, Odisha, and Uttar Pradesh. The release also says commercial production has started from three plants.

The release states that under the Design Linked Incentive (DLI) scheme, the government provides financial and infrastructure support, including free access to design tools, to startups and Micro, Small and Medium Enterprises (MSMEs) for semiconductor design.

The release says 24 semiconductor design projects have been approved for financial support under DLI, and 105 startups/MSMEs have received Electronic Design Automation (EDA) tool support.
