The Ministry of Electronics & Information Technology has said that the Government supports semiconductor design talent development in 315 institutes across India. The announcement is relevant for UPSC because semiconductor design is a core part of India’s technology self-reliance agenda and depends on a trained engineering talent base.

In Tamil Nadu, the support covers a wide spread of technical institutions, including the National Institute of Technology Tiruchirappalli, Indian Institute of Information Technology Tiruchirappalli, Anna University Regional Campus Coimbatore, Indian Institute of Information Technology Design and Manufacturing Kancheepuram, Indian Institute of Technology Madras, VIT campuses at Vellore and Chennai, SRM Institute of Science and Technology campuses at Kattankulathur/Chennai and Tiruchirappalli, and Karunya Institute of Technology and Sciences in Coimbatore.

The Tamil Nadu list also includes several engineering colleges across districts such as Chennai, Coimbatore, Kancheepuram, Madurai, Salem, Erode, Ramanathapuram, Tiruchirappalli, Vellore, Kanniyakumari, and Thiruvallur. The spread suggests an attempt to broaden semiconductor design exposure beyond a few premier campuses and build a larger pipeline of trained students.
