The Government of India is implementing the Central Sponsored Project for Computerization of Primary Agricultural Credit Societies (PACS). The Punjab update shows how a cooperative-sector reform is moving from sanction to field-level onboarding on Enterprise Resource Planning (ERP) software. For UPSC, the subject matters because PACS sit at the base of rural credit delivery and cooperative governance.

What has been reported for Punjab

According to the Ministry of Cooperation, 3,482 PACS in Punjab have been sanctioned for computerisation and 3,454 PACS have already been onboarded on ERP software. The same update records cumulative release of ₹33.94 crore to Punjab under the project since its launch.

Background and earlier position

PACS are the first tier of the short-term cooperative credit structure in rural India. They are important for crop loans, input purchases, and local financial inclusion. Computerisation has been pursued to improve accounting, transaction records, and management in these societies, and to connect them more cleanly with higher cooperative tiers and state systems.
