What happened (Tamil Nadu): PMMSY + Blue Revolution + FIDF support for deep-sea fishing vessels and coastal infrastructure
The Government of India, through the Ministry of Fisheries, Animal Husbandry and Dairying, sanctioned support for deep-sea fishing and fisheries infrastructure in Tamil Nadu under PMMSY, Blue Revolution, and the Fisheries and Aquaculture Infrastructure Development Fund (FIDF). The reported approach combines subsidy support for traditional fishers to acquire deep-sea fishing vessels and separate funding for fishing harbours and fish landing centres.
Key reported numbers for Tamil Nadu include the following: ₹1,314.81 crore has been sanctioned under Blue Revolution, PMMSY and FIDF for acquisition of 1,205 deep-sea fishing vessels by traditional fishers, including fishers from Tamil Nadu.₹187.9 crore has been sanctioned under Blue Revolution in Tamil Nadu for infrastructure projects, including a fishing harbour project at Mookaiyur and a fish landing centre at Kunthukal.₹155.57 crore has been sanctioned under PMMSY in Tamil Nadu. This includes three fishing harbour projects: (1) modernization of Chennai fishing harbour, (2) upgradation of Pazhayar fishing harbour, and (3) maintenance dredging of Colachel fishing harbour; and four fish landing centre projects: Nettukupam, Thazankuppam, Arangankuppam, and Goonankuppam.Under FIDF, 16 fishing harbours and 57 fish landing centres have been sanctioned in Tamil Nadu at a total project cost of ₹1,988.35 crore.
Background: Blue Revolution deep-sea sub-components during 2015-2020
The Department of Fisheries (DoF), Government of India introduced deep-sea focused support under Blue Revolution to promote deep-sea fishing in the Exclusive Economic Zone (EEZ) during 2015 to 2020. The reported Blue Revolution components were: “Assistance for Deep Sea Fishing” — financial assistance for traditional fishermen in coastal States and Union Territories, including Tamil Nadu.“Conversion of Trawlers into Resource Specific Deep-Sea Fishing Vessels” — support for converting trawlers into deep-sea fishing vessels designed for specific resources.
