What happened: Lok Sabha statement linking PMMSY measures and ICAR-CMFRI monitoring

Fisheries, Animal Husbandry and Dairying Minister <strong>Shri Rajiv Ranjan Singh alias Lalan Singh</strong> stated in the <strong>Lok Sabha</strong> that <strong>Pradhan Mantri Matsya Sampada Yojana (PMMSY)</strong> includes measures intended to reduce fishing pressure on <strong>inshore coastal waters</strong>. In the same Lok Sabha response, the Minister referred to <strong>ICAR-CMFRI</strong>’s long-term monitoring of marine fisheries and ecosystems and its use of statistically validated sampling and time-series data.

PMMSY measures mentioned for reducing fishing pressure on inshore coasts

The Minister stated that PMMSY supports acquisition and expansion of marine production options so that fishing pressure is diverted away from inshore coastal waters. The mentioned measures are:

• Acquisition of <strong>deep-sea fishing vessels</strong> • <strong>Open-sea cage culture</strong> • <strong>Mariculture</strong>, including <strong>seaweed farming</strong>
