What happened

In a Rajya Sabha written reply, Minister of State for Education Shri Jayant Chaudhary stated that the responsibility for establishing AI and Robotics Laboratories in schools lies with the respective State Governments or Union Territory (UT) Governments that have administrative jurisdiction over the schools.

Background and earlier position

Education falls in the Concurrent List of the Constitution. Under the practical administrative arrangement, most schools are under State/UT jurisdiction. Because of this jurisdictional reality, the establishment of school-level facilities and laboratories is treated as a responsibility of the State/UT that manages the school system.

What changed now

The written reply in the Rajya Sabha clarified the allocation of responsibility for AI and Robotics Laboratories in schools: the clarification reiterates that State/UT Governments are responsible for setting them up in schools under their jurisdiction, rather than framing it as a Centre-only implementation task.
