What happened: USBRL commissioning for all-weather rail connectivity
The Ministry of Railways commissioned the Udhampur–Srinagar–Baramulla Rail Link (USBRL) to provide all-weather connectivity between the Kashmir Valley and the rest of India. USBRL has a total length of 272 km and covers key districts in Jammu and Kashmir: Udhampur, Reasi, Ramban, Srinagar, Anantnag, Pulwama, Budgam and Baramulla.
The government describes USBRL as one of the most difficult new railway line projects undertaken in India after independence, mainly due to the “young Himalayas” terrain and geological challenges.

USBRL includes large rail bridges over major water/valley features and electrification across tunnels and open stretches, aimed at reliable operations across seasons.
