The Union Ministry of Social Justice and Empowerment has announced a nationwide National Mass Pledge Against Drug Abuse on 18 August 2026 to mark the 6th anniversary of the Nasha Mukt Bharat Abhiyaan (NMBA). The event is designed as a countrywide mobilisation exercise through physical and online participation.
This national pledge matters because the Union government is using social mobilisation, institutional convergence, and volunteer outreach as part of a broader drug-demand reduction strategy. For UPSC, the issue sits at the intersection of public health, youth welfare, community participation, and administrative coordination.
What happened now
A high-level coordination meeting chaired by Dr. Sandeep Rewaji Rathod, Joint Secretary (Drug Prevention), was held in the national capital to finalise the implementation strategy. The Ministry said the plan is meant to ensure participation of the target number of citizens across India.
The Ministry said the pledge will involve citizens and stakeholders through both physical and online modes, with a focus on mobilising the target number of participants across the country.
