India has announced its first Engineering Biology graduation course and a roadmap titled “Building India as a Leading Bioeconomy Powerhouse by 2035”. The announcement matters because it links biotechnology education with industrial policy, healthcare innovation, and long-term economic strategy.
The Ministry of Science & Technology said the course is meant to build an independent and sovereign biotechnology ecosystem. The roadmap projects a larger role for synthetic biology, AI-enabled biological research, and bio-manufacturing.
What happened now
Union Minister of State (Independent Charge) for Science & Technology and Earth Sciences Dr. Jitendra Singh announced the new graduation course at the launch event for the 2035 roadmap. He said the course would be the first of its kind in India and would train professionals at the intersection of engineering, biology, medicine, and emerging technologies.
The ministry presentation also included industry perspectives and addresses by senior policymakers. Dr. Jitendra Singh said Indian Institutes of Technology have already begun submitting proposals for interdisciplinary programmes with medical institutions.
