India has announced its first Engineering Biology graduation course and a 2035 roadmap that links biotechnology education, bio-manufacturing, and AI-enabled biology to long-term economic strategy.
- The Ministry of Science & Technology announced India’s first Engineering Biology graduation course and a 2035 bioeconomy roadmap.
- The Department of Biotechnology said India is among the world’s fastest-growing bioeconomies, with 15–18 per cent annual growth and nearly 100 bio-incubators.
- NITI Aayog was represented at the launch event and supported the roadmap’s vision of a nearly USD 700 billion bioeconomy by 2035.

The Ministry of Science & Technology said the course is meant to build an independent and sovereign biotechnology ecosystem. The roadmap projects a larger role for synthetic biology, AI-enabled biological research, and bio-manufacturing.

UPSC may ask about Engineering Biology as an emerging interdisciplinary field, India’s biotechnology policy ecosystem, or the policy trade-offs in building a sovereign bio-manufacturing base.
