The Telecom Regulatory Authority of India (TRAI) has released Independent Drive Test (IDT) findings for mobile network quality in parts of Tamil Nadu. The assessment covers Virudnagar and Tenkasi districts and is relevant because it measures how mobile services perform in real operating conditions, not only in operator claims or laboratory settings.
The findings matter for consumer protection and for the regulation of digital infrastructure. Independent field tests help show whether mobile networks deliver acceptable voice and data service across roads, hotspots, and other public-use locations.
What TRAI measured
TRAI said the purpose of the drive test is to assess and verify real-time quality of mobile network services provided by Telecom Service Providers (TSPs). The test covered both voice and data services across 2G, 3G, 4G and 5G networks using SIM cards from all TSPs and multiple test handsets.
The test parameters included:
Coverage gaps, call drop rate, call setup success rate, data download throughput, data upload throughput, latency, jitter, packet drop rate, call silence rate, and speech quality measured through Mean Opinion Score (MOS).
