The Ministry of Statistics and Programme Implementation (MoSPI) is India’s main statistical agency for several core economic indicators and for monitoring Sustainable Development Goals. Its work matters for both macroeconomic assessment and social policy because official numbers guide planning, inflation analysis, industrial tracking, and development monitoring.
What MoSPI does
MoSPI compiles and disseminates official statistics on the Indian economy. The ministry prepares estimates of Gross Domestic Product (GDP), the monthly Consumer Price Index (CPI), and the monthly Index of Industrial Production (IIP).
MoSPI also runs household surveys on labour force, social consumption, health, and education. These surveys help measure socio-economic conditions that are not fully captured by administrative records.

The Minister of State for Statistics and Programme Implementation, Planning, and Culture, Rao Inderjit Singh, informed the Rajya Sabha that MoSPI disseminates official statistics and administrative data through regular surveys and that these inputs support evidence-based policy formulation.
