The Indian Council of Medical Research (ICMR) has licensed three indigenous biomedical technologies under its Medical Innovations Patent Mitra initiative. The licenses were given for further development, manufacturing, and commercialization, showing the shift from publicly funded research to product development and industry use.
The development matters for UPSC because it combines public health, biomedical innovation, technology transfer, and affordable healthcare. It also fits the broader Indian policy goal of converting publicly funded science into usable medical products.
What happened
ICMR facilitated licensing of one therapeutic candidate and two vaccine technologies to Indian pharmaceutical and vaccine manufacturers. Emcure Pharmaceuticals Ltd. received the license for SHetA2, while Biological E Ltd. received licenses for two vaccine technologies developed at ICMR-National Institute of Research in Bacterial Infections (ICMR-NIRBI), Kolkata.
The three technologies
The first technology is SHetA2, described as a novel anti-HPV therapeutic candidate for Cervical Intraepithelial Neoplasia (CIN). The second is a fusion construct containing Salmonella typhi outer membrane protein, presented as a next-generation typhoid vaccine candidate. The third is a recombinant vaccine composition against Salmonella typhi/paratyphi and Shigella infections, aimed at broader protection against enteric bacterial pathogens.
