What happened
The Ministry of Textiles has stated that the Grant for Research and Entrepreneurship across Aspiring Innovators in Technical Textiles (GREAT) scheme has been operating under the National Technical Textiles Mission (NTTM) since 2023 to support start-ups in the technical textiles sector. According to the Union government’s written reply in Lok Sabha, the scheme is meant to help young innovators, scientists, technologists, and start-up ventures convert ideas into commercial technologies and products.
The Ministry of Textiles said that 31 start-ups have been approved under the GREAT scheme with a total project cost of Rs 15.40 crore. The Government of India share is Rs 13.65 crore.
UPSC can frame the National Technical Textiles Mission and the GREAT scheme as a policy question on how the Union government promotes research-to-market conversion, start-up finance, and institutional capacity in an emerging manufacturing segment. The issue also links to industrial policy, ease of innovation, and support for high-value textile applications in healthcare, defence, infrastructure, and sustainability.
