PMMSY increases India’s fish production; approvals for cold chain and marketing facilities
PMMSY-backed fisheries expansion has raised fish production and expanded cold chain and marketing infrastructure, according to a Lok Sabha reply

The Ministry of Fisheries, Animal Husbandry and Dairying said in a Lok Sabha reply that the Pradhan Mantri Matsya Sampada Yojana has supported the fisheries and aquaculture sector since Financial Year 2020-21. The reply is relevant for UPSC because it links a sectoral scheme to production growth, women beneficiaries, and post-harvest infrastructure.
What happened
The Department of Fisheries said that the Pradhan Mantri Matsya Sampada Yojana is being implemented for the holistic development of fisheries and aquaculture. The ministry also said fish production increased during the implementation period of the scheme.
UPSC can frame questions on the design of the Pradhan Mantri Matsya Sampada Yojana, the role of cold chain in reducing post-harvest losses, the importance of fisheries for livelihoods, and the scheme's focus on women beneficiaries and market infrastructure.
