What happened
The Union Budget 2026-27 announced integrated development of 500 reservoirs and Amrit Sarovars for fisheries and aquaculture. The Ministry of Fisheries, Animal Husbandry & Dairying says the plan is meant to tap underused inland water resources, improve fisher livelihoods, and widen participation of women self help groups (SHGs), fisheries cooperatives, and Fish Farmers Producer Organizations (FFPOs).
What the plan includes
The Department of Fisheries has listed several components for implementation under the Pradhan Mantri Matsya Sampada Yojana (PMMSY) framework:
The stated components include strengthening quality seed production through hatcheries, promoting cage and pen culture in reservoirs, providing boats and nets to reservoir fishermen, promoting composite fish culture and integrated fish farming in Amrit Sarovars, and creating fisheries infrastructure such as fish feed mills, cold storage, ice plants, fish kiosks, retail fish markets, fish transport vehicles, and fish value-added units.
