Key takeaways
  • The ministry says Beti Bachao Beti Padhao has been expanded across all districts as a component of Mission Shakti.
  • The scheme is intended to change attitudes toward the girl child through awareness, engagement, and empowerment.
  • Pradhan Mantri Matru Vandana Yojana is presented as a centrally sponsored maternity benefit scheme with direct transfer support and an additional benefit for an eligible second girl child.

The Ministry of Women and Child Development has said that Beti Bachao Beti Padhao has been expanded across all districts of India as part of the SAMBAL vertical of Mission Shakti. The ministry describes the programme as a behavioural-change initiative for improving the Child Sex Ratio, strengthening the social position of the girl child, and encouraging multi-sectoral action.

The policy significance lies in the nature of the scheme. The ministry says Beti Bachao Beti Padhao is not a direct cash-benefit programme with a countable beneficiary list. Instead, it works through awareness, engagement, and coordination among government agencies, media, civil society, and the public to shift attitudes toward the girl child.

The UPSC angle · GS2 · GS1 · GS3

UPSC can frame questions on the objectives and architecture of Beti Bachao Beti Padhao under Mission Shakti, the difference between awareness-led social change and measurable beneficiary-based schemes, and the policy challenge of linking behavioural change with outcomes in child sex ratio and girls’ education.
