What happened (MoE’s Lok Sabha information on Central Universities)

The Ministry of Education reported details on Central Universities during a Lok Sabha written reply by Minister of State for Education Shri Sukanta Majumdar. The reply covered the number of Central Universities operational in India under the Ministry’s administrative purview, student enrolment counts, recent establishment of new Central Universities, and environment-friendly initiatives for sustainable campus development.

MoE stated the following status and figures for Central Universities under its administrative purview:

57 Central Universities were presently operational in the country.47 Central Universities are under the administrative purview of the Ministry of Education.Indira Gandhi National Open University (IGNOU) is excluded from the count of Central Universities under the Ministry’s administrative purview in the reply.All Central Universities under the Ministry’s administrative purview are offering undergraduate programmes except Sindhu Central University.A total of 309,542 students are enrolled in the 47 Central Universities.

Background and earlier position (institutional nature and governance)

MoE described Central Universities as statutory autonomous organisations established under Central Acts of Parliament. Each Central University is governed through its own Central Act and the associated Statutes and Ordinances made under that Act.
