What happened

The National Health Authority (NHA) under the Ministry of Health and Family Welfare reported that the Ayushman Bharat Digital Mission (ABDM) Scan and Register service has crossed 25 crore OPD (outpatient department) registrations. The service helps patients complete OPD registration digitally by scanning a QR code at participating healthcare facilities.

NHA stated that the service began in October 2022 (earlier known as Scan and Share Service). The service is designed to make OPD registration faster and more convenient.

How Scan and Register works (digital workflow)

Scan and Register enables OPD registration through an ABDM-enabled patient-to-facility workflow. Patients scan a facility QR code using any ABDM-enabled Personal Health Record (PHR) application. After providing consent, the patient securely shares their ABHA (Ayushman Bharat Health Account) profile with the healthcare facility so that patient details can be fetched for instant OPD registration.

NHA described the intended outcome as reduced waiting time at registration counters and improved operational efficiency for healthcare providers. The service also connects citizens to the digital health ecosystem by enabling access and sharing of ABHA-linked digital health records.
