What happened: CCRAS and BIS sign MoU for Ayurveda quality standards

The Central Council for Research in Ayurvedic Sciences (CCRAS), the apex Ayurveda research organisation under the Ministry of Ayush, and the Bureau of Indian Standards (BIS), India’s national standards body, signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) to jointly advance quality standards, conformity assessment, scientific research and capacity building for the Ayush sector.

The MoU was signed by Prof. (Vaidya) Rabinarayan Acharya, Director General, CCRAS, and Shri Sanjay Pant, Deputy Director General (Standardisation-II), BIS. Vaidya Rajesh Kotecha, Secretary, Ministry of Ayush, was present.

Background and earlier position

BIS already uses sectoral committees and standard-setting processes to develop Indian Standards. BIS also reported that the Ayurveda Sectional Committee currently has 128 Indian Standards and that 243 standards across Ayush domains were developed during the last three years.

CCRAS reported that multiple CCRAS institutes and laboratories have adopted internationally recognised quality systems, with several institutes and laboratories accredited under NABL (National Accreditation Board for Testing and Calibration Laboratories) and ISO standards (International Organization for Standardization).
