What happened: MoHUA pushes GIS-based digital Master Plans under AMRUT and AMRUT 2.0
The Ministry of Housing and Urban Affairs (MoHUA) has undertaken initiatives to strengthen urban planning systems through GIS-based (Geographic Information System-based) planning and digital Master Plans for cities and Urban Local Bodies (ULBs) under Atal Mission for Rejuvenation and Urban Transformation (AMRUT) and AMRUT 2.0. MoHUA’s approach uses geospatial databases and GIS-enabled digital Master Plans so that urban planning and infrastructure development can be supported by spatial evidence.
MoHUA states that it is implementing a dedicated sub-scheme on GIS-based Master Planning under AMRUT/AMRUT 2.0 with the objective of creating geospatial databases, digital base maps, and GIS-enabled Master Plans for statutory planning and infrastructure development.
Sub-schemes and official status reported by MoHUA
MoHUA reports the following GIS-based Master Planning sub-schemes and progress indicators:
“Formulation of GIS based Master Plan for AMRUT Cities”: Approved as a 100% centrally funded sub-scheme under AMRUT. “Formulation of GIS based Master Plans for Class-II towns with the population 50,000–99,999”: Launched under AMRUT 2.0.
