What happened: government-reported measures on drug trafficking, coordination and awareness
The Government of India, as reported by the Ministry of Home Affairs (MoHA), described a multi-pronged approach to curb cross-border smuggling of drugs. MoHA also reported NMBA outreach and a Centre–State coordination architecture built around NCORD, NCORD Portal, and state-level NCORD structures, supported by enforcement actions under the Prevention of Illicit Traffic in Narcotic Drugs and Psychotropic Substances (PITNDPS) Act, 1988.
Background and earlier position
MoHA-linked drug control relies on a demand-reduction programme (NMBA) led by the Department of Social Justice & Empowerment and a coordination mechanism for drug law enforcement (NCORD) linking central and state agencies. Enforcement outcomes include preventive detention of habitual traffickers under PITNDPS and seizures under the Narcotic Drugs and Psychotropic Substances (NDPS) Act, 1985.
What changed now (latest reported updates)
The PIB information reports an updated Narcotics Control Vision Document for 2026–2029 released on 26 June 2026, NCORD organisational meetings at central and state levels, and continued use of the NCORD Portal. It also provides reported detention figures during 2025 and up to June 2026, and seizure information for 2022–2024 as per NCRB annexure data.
