What happened

Digital India BHASHINI Division (DIBD), under the Digital India Corporation (DIC), Ministry of Electronics and Information Technology (MeitY), and NITI Aayog signed a Statement of Intent (SoI) to collaborate on multilingual, voice-first AI for inclusive governance and citizen-centric public service delivery through the BHASHINI for Seva/Sanchalan initiative.

Background and earlier position

BHASHINI, led by DIBD, is described as a national AI-powered multilingual digital inclusion platform. The government communication states that BHASHINI supports multiple Indian text and voice languages and is used across a large number of government websites, enabling AI inferences at scale and aiming to make language AI part of Digital Public Infrastructure.

What changed now

The NITI Aayog–DIBD SoI commits both organisations to integrate BHASHINI language technologies into NITI Aayog’s digital platforms and services using translation APIs and reference applications. The collaboration covers multiple BHASHINI components: BHASHINI Udyat, BHASHINI Mitra, BHASHINI AppMitra, BHASHINI Sahayogi, and BHASHINI Pravakta.
