What happened

Kerala Home Minister Ramesh Chennithala met Tamil Nadu Chief Minister C. Joseph Vijay in Chennai and proposed a coordinated anti-drug mechanism among southern States. The discussion focused on tackling narcotics trafficking across the Kerala-Tamil Nadu border through police intelligence sharing.

Kerala briefed Tamil Nadu on Operation Toofan. Kerala said the drive produced over 6,000 arrests of drug peddlers and nearly 5,500 cases in 43 days.

Background and earlier position

Narcotics trafficking is not limited to one State. Trafficking networks often move across State borders, which makes single-State policing less effective. Inter-State intelligence sharing is therefore a standard internal-security requirement under cooperative federalism.
