What happened

Congress leaders in Dehradun alleged that the Uttarakhand administration tried to limit attendance at Rahul Gandhi’s student-focused programme, ‘Chhatron Ki Goonj’ (Voice of Students). Rahul Gandhi, who is the Leader of the Opposition in the Lok Sabha, was scheduled to attend the event on Friday amid broader Opposition criticism over alleged irregularities in NEET and other examinations.

The venue was shifted from the larger Parade Ground to the Bannu School ground after permission for the Parade Ground was cancelled. Congress leader Harak Singh Rawat said the change was meant to restrict attendance, while NSUI president Vinod Jakhar alleged that the State government was uneasy about Gandhi’s popularity.

Background and earlier position

The broader backdrop is the repeated allegation of paper leaks and cheating in recruitment and entrance examinations. In this case, Opposition leaders linked the Dehradun programme to complaints about examination fairness and student anxiety over jobs, admissions, and merit-based selection.
