The U.S. Department of Justice (DOJ) has alleged that gangster Lawrence Bishnoi led a decentralised transnational crime network that planned to kill a person identified in U.S. records only as “S.K.” between 2022 and 2026. The DOJ said the initials match threats made against actor Salman Khan during the same period in Mumbai. The case is important for UPSC because it links organised crime, prison-linked command structures, digital coordination, and cross-border law enforcement.
The indictment also named three Punjab-linked organised crime syndicates operating across India, Canada, the U.S., and parts of Europe. According to the DOJ, 37 people have been charged so far. The allegations include recruitment of minors, low-paid criminal tasks, and use of student and foreign worker visas to move loyal members abroad.
