What happened
The Union government appointed Harjit Singh Grewal as Chairperson of the National Commission for Minorities (NCM). The Ministry of Minority Affairs also appointed Munawari Begum as Vice-Chairperson and Glenn E. Souza Ticlo as a member. Each appointment carries a term of three years from the date of assuming office or until further orders.
The appointments are important because the Chairperson post had remained vacant since April 2025, after the term of Iqbal Singh Lalpura ended. The government’s notification also indicates that the National Commission for Minorities will function with four members against its sanctioned strength of seven.
Background and earlier position
The National Commission for Minorities is the Union-level body that addresses issues concerning notified minority communities. In practice, the effectiveness of such bodies depends on timely appointments, full membership, and the ability to examine grievances and policy gaps.
A prolonged vacancy at the top of the Commission can affect continuity in oversight and representation. The new appointments restore leadership, but the Commission still remains below its sanctioned strength.
